Jubilee REACH

KID-REACH

The Need:

We discovered that our neighbors have significant educational needs.  Many foreign-born parents are illiterate in their first language, and do not speak, read or write English well enough to help their children with homework.  Other parents work two or three jobs, are too busy or too tired to help.  Most families are low income so can’t afford private tutoring.  Even in elementary school, children were falling behind and becoming at-risk for dropping out of school.   We reached out to parents with free ESL, parent and computer education.  And we offered kids free tutoring.

The Beginning:

We started small.  Collaborating with another KidREACH Program, we kicked off our evening tutoring program with five elementary age students.  To serve students with the greatest need, we received referrals from the local elementary school and interviewed interested parents.  Volunteer tutors were recruited and carefully matched to students.  Tutors met with students twice a week, sharing a nutritious snack, opening backpacks and planners, doing homework and having fun together.

Today:

One year later, KidREACH has ten students staffed at two tutors per student.  Tutors come from every walk of life.  The students are flourishing as they learn that they can learn.  As their kids do better, and parents get help with ESL, parenting education, computers and other services, families do better.  There is a growing waiting list for KidREACH.

What Kids Say:

“I love my tutor so much.  She is the bestest,” says a first grader with a lisp.

What Parents Say:

“Thank you, Jubilee.  This is the best thing that has ever happened for my daughter,” says a mom who works two jobs.

What Volunteers Say:

“It is so easy to find a little time for these kiddos,” says a retired teacher.  “Something special happens when you read with a little kid,” says a business man.  “I use everything I’ve learned with my grandchildren, “says a vigorous grandmother in her eighties.

What School Staff Say:

“Thank you for all you do for our kids.  This is an unprecedented partnership that should be repeated throughout our school district.”
